Proclamation of the Capital Region as the Birding Capital of Canada
Whereas, the Capital Region District (CRD) is home to an extraordinary diversity of avian
species (423 confirmed bird species, and a record 154 wintering species recorded during a
Christmas Bird Count), and the CRD boasts an impressive range of habitats that support migratory,
resident and wintering birds;
Whereas, the CRD has become a prominent destination for birdwatchers and nature
enthusiasts from across Canada and around the world, drawn by its unique ecosystems and
thriving bird populations;
Whereas, our municipal, regional, provincial and national parks, ecological reserves, three
Migratory Bird Sanctuaries (Victoria Harbour, Esquimalt Lagoon, and Shoal Harbour) that are
important bird areas, as well as waterfronts, forests, coastal meadows, islands and wetlands
provide exceptional opportunities for exploration and appreciation of birds in their natural habitats;
Whereas, the CRD is committed to promoting conservation e orts, education, and awareness
programs aimed at protecting our feathered friends and their habitats;
Whereas, the tradition of birdwatching fosters a sense of community, encourages outdoor
activity, and inspires individuals, families and children to connect with nature;
Now, Therefore, I, Rosa Munzer, President, Rocky Point Bird Observatory, proclaim the Capital
Regional District as the Birding Capital of Canada.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of April, 2025.
Rosa Munzer
